Professional varnish is painted onto enamel in seconds and hardens with saliva. It helps remineralize early weak spots and reduces acid attack sensitivity — minutes per visit, no numbing involved. The treatment itself: after the cleaning we dry the teeth, brush the varnish on, and it sets by contact with saliva almost immediately. Modern varnishes use xylitol carriers, so the aftertaste is mild — not the-tray-of-foam memory from childhood. Candidacy notes we check first: pregnancy (minor consideration), very high home fluoride intake, and active enamel white-spot demineralization — where we target calcium paste first instead.

Who Needs Adult Fluoride
Recurring-cavity histories, dry-mouth medications, exposed root surfaces, and couples sharing cups (decay bacteria are contagious). If your exam shows strong natural enamel and low risk, we will say so. At-home adjuncts exist but do different work: prescription-strength fluoridated paste works nightly but accurately measures the baseline; in-office varnish is where the professional dose goes.
